Product description
Discover the wild beauty and dramatic maritime history of Mizen Head (Carn Uí Néid), the most southerly point of the Irish mainland. This rugged corner of County Cork has witnessed countless sea dramas, from ferocious Atlantic storms to tragic shipwrecks – stories that inspired the creation of the iconic Fastnet Rock Lighthouse.
Perched on a rock 6.5 kilometres southwest of Cape Clear Island, the granite Fastnet tower took eight years to build and first shone its light in 1904. At 54 metres tall, it remains the highest lighthouse on the Irish coast and a defining landmark for sailors in the world-famous Fastnet Yacht Race.
Looking out over this legendary lighthouse is the Mizen Head Fog-Signal Station, built in 1909 on an island connected to the mainland by a breathtaking footbridge 45 metres above the ocean. Originally without a light, it relied on its booming foghorn until 1959, when a buoy lantern was introduced. Today, the site is home to the Mizen Vision Visitor Centre, a popular destination renowned for its whale-watching opportunities.
Measuring 50 x 34 cm and illustrated by William Helps, this puzzle captures the essence of Ireland’s wild Atlantic edge – a perfect mix of challenge, history, and natural beauty for all ages.
